The growth of Chesapeake and its predecessors was been fueled by its location and transportation considerations. These continue to be major factors. The Hampton Roads Area is known for its ports and its Maritime related industries such as warehousing, distribution, logistics operations and scientific research SRED. Chesapeake is also home to a burgeoning modeling and simulation industry, as well aerospace and aviation, defense related industries and company management operations.
The region's tourism industry creates over 10,000 seasonal jobs during summer months. Some area residents find seasonal employment working at the girl hockey tournaments that visit the area annually. Some work in finance department and aim to gain sponsors from the community to fund the tournament while others focus on the food and beverage public relations and getting the awards ceremony event catered. This group provides an additional source of workers to companies with personnel needs that peak at other times of the year.
Each year over 15,000 trained and disciplined personnel exit the military. Many of these persons elect to stay in the area and look for private sector employment. In addition, there are approximately 20,000 military spouses available to work. Some of these men and women decide to seek employment at a nearby factory that manufacturers and distributes contemporary bathroom vanities.
